by Julia Moulden – Six Billion Reasons to Get Out of Bed Each Day

Julia Moulden offers practical advice for people who want to reinvent their work and gives answers to questions such as “What are my motivations?” “What skills can I leverage?” “Where is the greatest need?” and “How do I get there from here? A former speechwriter, Moulden has written numerous books, and she is currently the author of a weekly column for The Huffington Post.

As the year comes to a close, The Wall Street Journal has singled out a superstar for the decade and it’s… Canada!

Yes, that’s right, Phred Dvorak has written a glowing article about how Canada has emerged from the financial crisis with the “healthiest banking system and strongest economic recovery in the G7”. Oh, but there’s more, “And that solid performance is fueling a growing assertiveness in a country often known for its reserve.”

Goodness, first “Own the podium” and now this? This Canadian is swooning.

All kidding aside, do read the article, because Dvorak makes some great points — and she doesn’t even mention hockey (not once!). What’s on her list of reasons why Canada is #1 with a bullet? Saying no to BHP Billiton’s $39 billion bid to buy Potash (that would’ve bought a lot of poutine, folks). That we’re seeking out new markets, demanding better trade deals with the U.S., and developing our resources like never before.

Wow! Anyone over 50 grew up in a very different country, wryly summed up by poet Robin Skelton two decades ago:

American applauds with glee the highest climber of the tree,
Englishman has half a mind the tree is not the proper kind,
Canadian, with tiny frown, takes an axe and chops it down.

Are Canadians tired of being the bashful, blushing ones? Are we ready to stand up and tell the world we’re fabulous? I say yes! And that Prime Minister Wilfred Laurier had it all wrong. This is Canada’s century.
