Students Take an Active Role in the Speaking Industry

May 25th, 2009

By Ellesse Tomiczek, Events and Communications Coordinator

I recently attended the second annual Marketing Exchange event, hosted by the Marketing Postgraduate students at Humber College. Having been a recent graduate from the Marketing Management programme and involved in the event last year, I decided to attend. I also wanted to see how the event itself had evolved and the new measures that were put in place to market it to Humber College, the general public at large, and especially prospective employers. As well, it is also nice to see how the next group of students took on the challenge of planning this annual event amidst an economic downturn. Moreover, a number of guest speakers were present and I was interested to see what their role was within the event. (more…)

RIP John Crispo

Martin Perelmuter, President of Speakers’ Spotlight

John Crispo passed away recently, and while his death wasn’t a surprise (he was a few days shy of his 76th birthday, and had been battling cancer for 18 years), it still came as a tremendous shock to me. John was a larger-than-life personality, who brought incredible energy, passion and fervour to everything he did. It’s difficult to imagine (more…)

The Mastery of Motivation

May 13th, 2009

by Kelly MacDonald, Partner and Senior Vice President of Speakers’ Spotlight

I just saw speaker, Mike Lipkin for easily the 20th time.  It’s true I’m a fan!  It’s also true that I am a tough critic, having been in the business a long time, one can become somewhat jaded and it takes a lot for me to be impressed by a motivational speaker. The fact that Mike is a partner in the marketing research firm, Environics and has at his fingertips, data on what is in the hearts and minds of Canadians, certainly gives him an edge, but even without that, (more…)

Interesting Meeting Trend

Lorraine Behnan, edutainer, communicator, professional evolution and change management speaker uses her upbeat style to motivate people to immediately put great ideas into action.

I sense a new meeting trend is emerging. My recent engagements and pending requests involve clients who want a speaker to have the ability to lead workshops and facilitate meetings in addition to delivering a keynote speech. The client wants to build on the fundamental messages and practices of the keynote. A speaker who can train as well as entertain.

This combined offering has great value.

  1. The keynote content can be taken to the next level whereby the participants can dive deeper into the learning and development process while the ideas are current. There is immediate opportunity to put theory into practice.
  2. The participants build a deeper relationship with the speaker thereby increasing their willingness to embrace and implement ideas.
  3. The continuity of themes and practices come from having the same person deliver the keynote and workshop or facilitation.
  4. If you are holding your meeting at an off-site venue with a smaller group consider inviting the speaker to participate in social and recreational activities.  This inclusion fosters camaraderie and teamwork and can build trust and connectivity which is essential for a successful meeting.
  5. Engaging the same person to be a keynote speaker, workshop leader, and facilitator may allow for a cost saving opportunity.

Jim Carroll, author, columnist, nice guy, Futurist, innovation and trends expert

Business Week ran an article in January, “10 Worst Innovation Mistakes in a Recession.”

It’s easy to point out mistakes. It can be harder to indicate what you should be doing.

Since last year, when the meltdown began, I’ve been keynoting events worldwide, rapidly adjusting my theme to one of “how you can innovate during a recession.” I’ve had the opportunity of seeing first hand quite a few very innovative strategies from CEO’s and others in a wide variety of events, and I keep modifying my message at rapid speed to incorporate a vast variety of ideas.
